Department Of Commerce - Shift 1

History

 

Established as an Undergraduate Department in 1972 and Post Graduate Department in 1980, the Department is offering Ph.DProgramme from 1994 onwards. 

Commerce is the most sought degree among student community. Guru Nanak College established the Undergraduate Commerce Department in 1972. Further the department introduced Post Graduate – M.Com. in 1980 due to rising popularity of commerce course. The Department started   offering Ph.DProgramme from 1994 onwards for development of research activities among student community .

The department also conducts 3 Add on Certificate course approved by UGC, namely certificate course in Banking, Insurance and E-Commerce.  Ten of the members are Doctorates in Commerce and five of them are recognizes Ph.D guides of University of Madras and other Universities. More than 40 candidates have been awarded doctoral degree through this Department. The professors of the Department have been presenting research papers at National, International Conferences and publishing articles in referred journals regularly in order to meet out the societal needs and requirements. The department of commerce strives to equip the students with multi-dimensional talents to face the competitive world in future. The Department is known for eminent professors who have authored several books which are most popular among the students community.

Program Outcomes

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES – B.Com

vTo encourage the students to take up entrepreneurship as a career by providing adequate knowledge on proposal writing, procurement of financial assistance from MSME, NSIC and government agencies.
vTo enable the students to understand the functions and operations of bank, recent technological development of banking and insurance companies.
vTo provide adequate knowledge on income tax provision and implication which in turn helps them to prepare their individual tax filling also highlighting on recent changes in tax filling
vTo provide knowledge on business related laws and its amendments, latest changes in Companies Act 2013. They are also trained to prepare memorandum, articles and prospectus of the company.
vThe students are made to focus on individual and company accounting system, which in turn help them to use in their professional courses.
vTo enrich young minds with human resources managerial skills, aptitude skills, interview skills and over all personality skills to face the challenges in the corporate world.
vTo enable the students to communicate ideas effectively in both written and oral forms and also various correspondence related to business.

vTo inculcate research knowledge in preparation of questionnaire and data analysis, by using various statistical tools for research analysis
vTo encourage the students to prepare project in functional areas of commerce to acquire knowledge for further research.
vTo provide practical training experience to students in the form of Internship in varied fields of business and commerce.
vTo enable the students to understand the functions of stock market, SEBI guidelines for listing of securities and selection of portfolios which helps them to take stock broking business as their career.
vTo equip the students with adequate knowledge on the relevance of information system in the current corporate world.
