History

Brief History of the Department of Economics  A Milestone 

  • 1971-1972   -  Under Graduate course was started
  • 1980-1981   -  Post Graduate course was started
  • 1990-1991   -  Started the Part - Time Ph.D Programme 
  • 2006-2007   -  Started the Full -Time Ph.D Programme
  • 2007-2008   -  Started the Part -Time & Full - Time M.Phil Programme

Scope of the Course:

  • Economists  are  employed  in  large  numbers  in  industries,  institutions  and  different departments  of  the  Government. 
  • Financial  institutions  –  both  national  and  international absorb  Economists  with  some  training.  
  • With globalization the  need  for  economists  in business and industry is growing. 
  • Hence, constant effort should be made to improve the skill and knowledge of the students of economics and make them employable.

  • To enable the learners understand the various markets and their roles in an economic set-up, 
  • To hone one's skill in analysis and interpretation of economic principles, 
  • To equip enough knowledge to start an enterprise. 
  • To develop self-confidence among student community. 
  • To cater to the present day need of the society.

MA - Economics Programme

To prepare them for specialized knowledge and application of skills to innovative the economic theory

M. Phil - Economics programme
To recognize and explore topics relevant to academic and policy-making arenas.
To formulate social sciences hypotheses and use empirical models to test them.
To conduct research to evaluate important questions in social sciences by reviewing academic literature, collecting data, and applying econometric methods.
To communicate research findings effectively to economists, business leaders, and the general public.

Ph. D - Economics Programme
To demonstrate mastery of one branch of economic theory: micro, macro, or heterodox analysis
To demonstrate mastery of an applied field of knowledge within the discipline of economics
To formulate and answer empirically an original question in a field of economics
