Department Of Mathematics - Shift 1

History

The Guru Nanak College which was established as an undergraduate institution for men in 1971 marking the 500th birthday of the great saint Guru Nanak Devji, with late Lt. Col. G. S. Gill as President   and late Padma Shri. P. Dhawan as the Secretary, has blossomed into a full fledged  co-educational Post Graduate Institution.

The College which is affiliated to the University of Madras got the rare honor of being given the affiliation to B.Sc. Mathematics (Major subject) at the time of its inception in the year 1971. Since then the department has been imparting mathematical knowledge and skills to students of various programmes.

  • To involve students in various projects which will develop their subject interest, and improve their analytical and logical thinking skills.
  • To conduct pedagogical training, workshops and conferences for faculty to enhance their knowledge.
  • To conduct outreach programs for socially excluded, financially backward children and special children.
  • To develop mathematical thinking and applying it to solve challenging problems in various fields, industries and real life problems.
  • To provide an ambience where students can learn, enhance their creativity and become competent users of Mathematics knowledge and its various applications.
  • To communicate the beauty, utility and excitement of mathematics and to be frontiers of new advancements.
  • To educate students the importance moral values and developing self-discipline, self-reliance which will make them gain most in life

Objective

  • Build and enhance computational skills necessary in today's society.
  • Develop the students' ability to understand, develop the mathematical concepts both numerically and graphically and enhance problem solving skills.
  • Encourage and reinforce the critical thinking skills of the students.
  • Develop the students ability to intelligently communicate mathematical results in both  written and oral format.
  • To provide for professional cadres in the field of mathematics to support national development programs within public and higher education institutes.
  • To encourage contemplation of latest scientific research techniques in the field

Program Outcomes

Various options are available for B.Sc., Mathematics graduate to pursue their higher studies. Details of best higher studies options for B.Sc., Mathematics graduates are given below.

M.Sc. /Ph.D.
One of the best higher studies option available for the B.Sc. Mathematics graduate is to do Master’s Degree in Mathematics followed by Ph.D., or  M.Phil. Thus they can find a promising career in Research or Teaching field. Another option is to do Master’s Degree in Economics or Econometrics. This will help them to pursue one of the best career options, Indian Economics Services (IES) and in Indian Statistical Institutes. 

Master of Computer Application (MCA) is the best higher study option for the B.Sc., Mathematics graduates who wish to pursue their career in IT sector. Research Agencies like Defense Research and Development Organization prefer MCA graduates with Mathematics background in their Remote Sensing Centers. So MCA is a good higher study option for the graduates in B.Sc., Mathematics.
                                                                                                                                               
Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the best higher study option for the B.Sc., Mathematics graduates who wish to pursue their career in Management field. If they do the specialization in Finance in MBA, then they can reach up to higher positions like Chief Finance Officer in Corporate Sector.

Department Association Activities

Mathematics Association “CARTESIA” has been successfully conducting various events over the years commencing from 2002. As a part of the association activities, various competitions involving maths are being conducted to students of the department like Mathematics modelling, Quiz, Sketch art, Adzap.

The recent event being a “National seminar” in the year 2016-17. It commenced with the Inaugural function and National Seminar in August 2016. Dr.S.Thirumagan, Controller of Examinations, University of Madras formally inaugurated the activities of Mathematics association with a lecture on “Mathematics in Real Life”. Prof. Sreenath from S.V University, Andhra Pradesh; Prof. A. M. S. Ramasamy from Central University, Pondichery and Dr. A. Rajkumar Dare from MCC, Chennai gave lecture on different topics. The conference concluded with valedictory address by Dr. G.P.Youvaraj, Director, Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.

In the year 2015- 16, Dr. N. Thillaigovindan, Professor, Department of Mathematics, College of natural sciences, Arba Minch University, Ethiopia delivered the inaugural address and gave a lecture on the topic “Fuzzy Set theory and Applications”. Mr. K. S. Bharathan, Associate Professor & Head (Retd.), D. B. Jain College, Chennai, presided over the valedictory function and delivered a lecture on “Career in Mathematics”.

In the year 2013-14, Dr. P. R. vittal, Professor of Mathematics and former Principal of RKM Vivekananda College, Chennai inaugurated the activities and gave a lecture on “Mathematics in Real World”
