Department of Computer Applications (B.C.A) - Shift 2

History

  • BCA course has its genesis in 2000 with 32 students under a single roof.
  • An additional section was introduced in the year 2005 due to overwhelming growth of Information Technology.
  • The growth of the Department led to the expansion of sections from 1 to 3 within a period of 2 years (2007).
  • Department of Computer Application got bifurcated from the Department of Computer Science on 18th August, 2008 and the successful Head of BCA is Dr. V. Devi.
  • At present, the total number of students were 450.

  • To produce professionals with ability to make appropriate use of computer in the field of IT and communication, so as to meet the current demand of the industry, trade and service sector.
  • To develop individual talent, personal relationship and creative group life with high moral standards through a diversified program of campus activities.
  • To train and develop the students as IT professionals with confidence, competence, commitment and character.
  • Admissions are conducted independently.
  • Degrees finally awarded by the affiliated university.

Objective

BCA is a full time professional credit based applied course including mathematics and electronics along with computer science subjects that will provide theoretical foundation for students of Computer Science. Fast growing information technology and communication systems have become critical components of almost every company’s strategic plan. BCA programme aims to develop academically competent and professionally motivated computer personnel, equipped with objective and critical thinking that compassionately foster the scientific temper with a sense of social responsibility. 
BCA course is meant to heighten technological know-how, to train students to become industry specialists, to provide research-based training and to encourage software development. BCA is an applied course including mathematics and electronics along with computer science subjects that will provide theoretical foundation for students of Computer Science. BCA course is designed to bridge the gap between the studies of computers and its applications.
Aims to develop academically competent and professionally motivated personnel, equipped with objective and critical thinking that compassionately foster the scientific temper with a sense of social responsibility. This program aims to shape computer professionals with the right moral and ethical values and can prepare students to face the challenges and opportunities in the IT industry by building strong foundations. BCA course is meant to heighten technological know-how, to train students to become industry specialists, to provide research-based training and to encourage software development.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES 2017-2018

SEMINAR I 

The Department of BCA started its yearlong activities for the academic year 2017-2018 conducted a seminar entitled “IT Industry-Career Opportunity” held on 20-07-2017 presented by MS. RenukaGunasekaran, the founder of Clover Thoughts. The main target of this seminar is to improve the skill quality, enhancing student motivation, fostering intellectual agility, and encouraging democratic habits of the students pertaining to interviews.

REPORT OF THE TALENT HUNT 

‘Talent show’ can be seen as a way to enhance the self-esteem, confidence, and assurance of youth. The Department of BCA has hosted the TALENT HUNT program for the first year students on 11/08/2017. The program started with Prayer followed by Welcome speech and Introduction about Talent Hunt program by Dr.V.Devi (HOD, BCA Department). Various Technical and Non-Technical events conducted. Students are open to choose their competition which depends on their interest, skill and capacity.

The main aim of conducting these activities is to identify and to nurture the talents from a young age to enhance the self -confidence in their skills which will be transformed into studies to gain parallel academic excellence. Non-technical programs like JAM (Just a Minute), ADZAP, MIME, Collage, Photography, Rangoli, Mehandi, Cooking without Fire, Carving (Fruits, Vegetables), Trash art, Singing, and Dancing provide a good exposure to the students. It helps in channelizing energy, encourages social growth, promotes emotional well – being, makes individual more responsible, relaxes the mind. Technical programs like Quiz, Paper, Presentation, Debugging, Web Designing helps in better time – management, improves the confidence level, builds and prepares the students for a Career.

The Event ended with a grand success, with energetic participation from students and diligent planning and accomplishment by the staff.

WORKSHOP REPORT 

The Department of BCA organized three days workshop on 16th, 17th, and 18th August 2017, focuses on all advanced topics in an IT industry        “EXPLORE – 360 IoT”. A workshop is a period of discussion or practical work on a particular subject in which a group of students share their knowledge or experience. The workshop was handled by a team of eminent resource persons from the respective field.  The workshop provided an interactive brainstorming smart atmosphere between the resource persons and the students.  All the students from BCA department actively participated in this workshop.

Dignitaries on the stage were honored with a memento. Mrs. K .RAVIYA, Assistant Professor proposed the Introduction speech about Workshop. The Guest speakers   MR. B. GANAPATHY SUBRAMANIAM, highlighted the importance of mobile computing, and MR. G. SENTHIL KUMAR, presented the topics of SAP ABAP, MR.GOPI VENKATESAN on Networking concepts,  MR. BARANI, on Big data, MS. D. REVATHY on Ethical hacking and MR. VINOTH KUMAR on Web Technology (PHP &Photoshop).

Smart speaking workshop aims at exposing an advanced topic in an IT Industry for all BCA students that enables them to understand, explore & contribute to the domain.

Sound resource persons and administrators stood behind the success of the workshop.  Feedback was extremely positive.  The presentation and the inputs given by the resource persons were highly valued.  Students appreciated for being able to clarify doubts with the experts.

The Coordinators of the Workshop has encapsulated the outcome of the Workshop and concluded the Workshop with vote of thanks.

INTRA DEPARTMENT TECHNICAL EVENTS

           ‘Intra Department Technical Events’ can be seen as a way to enhance the self-esteem, confidence, and assurance of youth. The Department of BCA has hosted the INTRA DEPARTMENT TECHNICAL EVENTS for the all BCA students on 06/12/2017. The main aim of conducting these activities is to identify and to nurture the talents from a young age to enhance the self -confidence in their skills which will be transformed into studies to gain parallel academic excellence. Technical programs like Quiz, Paper-Presentation and Code Marathon helps in better time – management, improves the confidence level, builds and prepares the students for a Career.Non-technical programs like JAM (Just a Minute), Collage and Debate provide a good exposure to the students.

SEMINAR II 

A seminar entitled “Programming for the SoS SOA VLSI Development” held on 12-12-2017 presented by Dr. Ravi Dakshinamoorthy, the founder & CEO of  XSEED ITEM. The seminar was based on Computer proficiency as it is essential for relevance in today's computer-driven society. The out base of seminar is to provide an opportunity for students to explore topics in a relatively small group in order to clarify their knowledge and understanding.

INTERCOLLEGIATE TECHNO CULTURA FEST DO’IT’2018 

The Department of Computer Applications (BCA), Guru Nanak College Organized an Intercollegiate Techno Cultura Fest DO’IT’2018 for the academic year 2017-2018. DO’IT’2018 was inaugurated on January 4th 2018 by the gracious presence of  Ms.VijayalakshmiDevarajan(Director, United Techno Info Systems Pvt Ltd), Mr.GeorgeKoshi (Lead – Education Training and Assessment, Infosys).  DO’IT’ that is organized every year is a techno cultural event, providing a platform for all the students to exhibit their talents. For the preceding academic year 2018 we have organized DO’IT’2018 Intercollegiate Techno Cultra Fest with the same enthusiasm and determination among the new set of student coordinators, student volunteers and staff coordinator. The event was successful enough to attract 578 registrations from 41 colleges which include all the events such as Quiz, Debugging, Paper Presentation, Photography, Meme Creation, Variety (ADZAP/MMIME) and Group dance. K.C.S Kasi Nadar College took away the overall Winner up trophy and Madras Christian College won the overall Runner up trophy.

 

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Department of Computer Application(BCA) of Guru Nanak College organized  its first one day national conference titled “Innovation in Computer Technology and its Applications [NCICTA’18]” on 3rd Feb 2018.The Chief guest was Dr.R.SridaranRajagopal, Dean, Faculty of Computer Applications, Marwadi University, Rajkot and guest of honours were Dr.M.Hanumanthappa,Prof,Dept of Computer Science and Applications, Jnanbharathi Campus, Bangalore University, Bengaluru And Dr.John T Abraham Asst Prof, Dept of Computer Science Bharata Mata College, Ernakulam for the inauguration.  Principal Dr.M.Selvaraj, Director Dr.GunitaArunChandhok, Deputy Director Dr. P.V.KumaraGuru and Dean & Head Dr.V.Devi presided over the inaugural session. Conference Proceedings is released by the dignitaries.The technical sessions were chaired by Dr.V.Jeyabalaraja, Dept of Computer Science, VelammalEngineering College and Dr.C.JothiVenkateswaran, Principal, Govt Arts & Science College, Perumbakkam.

The conference received a good response; more than 250 papers were submitted by research scholars and students from all over India. Among that 130 papers were selected for proceedings and 20 papers were presented at the conference.

 Mr. Manjit Singh Nayar, General Secretary & Correspondent graced the valedictory session. Out of 20 papers presented Dr.Ajantha Devi from Guru Nanak College and Gayathri from Queen Mary’s College won the best paper award. The consolation prize was won by Karan & Vishal from Guru Nanak College. All the winners received cash prize and certificates. The conference was a grand success with a good knowledge sharing on the innovations on computer technology and its applications.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES 2018-2019

1. SEMINAR REPORT

          A seminar entitled “Augmented Reality” held on 02-08-2018, the speakers are M.Bharath, B.Ragavendran and J. Manikandan, the Alumnae of BCA Department and also Ms.Gayathri, the Augmented Reality developer of ARGICK Company.

Augmented reality is a technology that blends the digital world with the physical world and allows for a real-time interaction with the digital objects. This cutting-edge technology acts as an interactive tool that can be applied to various industries. The main target of this seminar is the students should know the growing integration of technology & digitalization of industrial, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and training processes, increasing corporate IT expenditure, and focus on productivity of the key factors driving the enhancing adoption of AR technologies.

The seminar was well organized, and effectively delivered, which helped all the students to actively involved to explore and clarify issues in detail. She explained the applications of AR (AUGMENTED REALITY)/VR (VIRTUAL REALITY) in different fields like Education, Commerce, Architecture, Archaeology, Social interaction, and Video games, Medical, Military and Navigation.This seminar provided a relaxed and ‘comfortable’ environment that allowed students to found out and explored their ideas through Query Sessions.

          “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort. Therefore, the feedback of the Participants confirmed that the seminar was very much useful to learn new technology and its applications in real world. Finally, the students got benefited and knew the notion of refinement of career opportunity.

2. TALENT HUNT REPORT

Talent Hunt is an event, which gives a platform to students to represent their talents in any field. It not only helps the participating students to show their abilities but also motivates other students, to come up front and show their hidden potential.The Department of BCA hashosted theTALENT HUNT program for the first year students on 04/07/2018. The program started with Prayer followed by Welcome speech and Introduction about Talent Hunt program by Dr.V.Devi(HOD, BCA Department).Various Technical and Non Technical events conducted. Students are open to choose their competition which depends on their interest, skill and capacity.

The main reason behind organizing these competitions is to nurture the intrinsic qualities of students and remove the fear of stage among students, which helps in personality development too and also to enhance the self -confidence in their skills which will be transformed into studies to gain parallel academic excellence. Non-technical programs like JAM (Just a Minute), ADZAP, Collage, Photography, Trash art and Singing,provide a good exposure to the students.
