Department Of English - Shift 2

History

The department of English started functioning since the beginning of Evening College in 1980-81, when the college offered B.Com course with one section, and added the second section in 1981-82 .By the year 1983-84, the college started offering B.A Corporate Secretary ship. The department of English grows as and when more degree courses are added since its inception. Currently with 14 UG courses including B.A ENGLISH and 5 PG courses

The Department of English continues to extend its valuable teaching since 1981.Apart from teaching Foundation English the Department handled Business Communication for B.com till 2002.

Mission

 

To impart and instill English Language Skills requisite in the present scenario

Vision

The vision of the Department is to equip the students for different employment opportunities and enable them to face the competitive challenging world.

Objective

  • To enhance the image of the Institution by dedicated staff through their commitment towards English Language Teaching.
  • To equip students the necessary language competence required in various life situations.
  • To produce cent percent Result.

Program Outcomes

English language is gaining steadily in every facet as a result of globalization. Today Businesses and Government organisations across the world has found that the English Language has become essential to interact to get the best deal in their ventures. Priority is being given to the highest degree of English Proficiency and excellent communication skills.

Soft skills for PG Courses:

Courses on soft skills and Internship, common to all PG Programmes were introduced with effect from 2007-08.

Soft Skills for UG Courses:

The syllabi including soft skills for the UG Degree courses of the I and II semesters (i.e. First year only) as per the format given by the Tamil Nadu State council for Higher Education (TANSCHE),Chennai, introduced with effect from the academic year 2008-2009 and has been functioning since then.

Courses on soft skills are intended to improve the communication skills and personality development of the students.

In 2015, UGC has conferred “Autonomous” status to the College.

Syllabus for Part II English and Soft skills is framed with the approval of Board of Studies.

The approved Autonomous Syllabus for Part II English and Soft skills has implemented from the Academic Year 2016-17.

ENGLISH LITERARY ASSOCIATION [2015-16]

The Department of English under the auspices of ELA (English Literary Association) started its yearlong activities in the month of July. A Guest lecture on “LSRW – The four pillars of success” was organized on 24th July 2015. Dr.Kanteesh Kumar Singh, CEO, Commuway was the resource person. He spoke about the importance of LSRW skills for a person to be a good communicator. The guest lecture gave students first-hand experience on different types of communication skills with live demonstrations. 

To tap the talents of oral, written, and vocabulary skills, ELA conducted competitions. The oratorical competition on the topics “My life – my message to the students-Abdul Kalam”, “Abdul Kalam – The jewel in the crown of mother India” & Kalam’s mission – machining minds of youth” – was conducted on 18th August 2015. Around 70 students participated. Essay writing competition on the topics “Morals & ethics in everyday life”, “ Has corruption haunted India’s growth?” was held on 28th September 2015. Around 60 students participated. ‘Word Play’ – was conducted on 12th January 2016. Around 80 students participated and “Presentation skills” was conducted on 19th January 2016. There was an overwhelming response from the students for all the competitions.

ELA organized a workshop on “Power of Personal Appearance” & “Job Ready” for the final year students on 10th February 2016. Ms.Radhika Nair, City Head, Chief Engagement Officer at Image Consulting Business Institute and Ms.V.Sasikala, Trainee at ICBI were the resource persons for the workshop. The workshop focused on Employability Skills, Resume Writing, and Personal Interview through Power Point Presentation. They stressed that the purpose of interview is to identify STAR (i.e. Situations, Task, Action, and Result) from the candidate. They also stressed the importance of communication skill to excel in life. Around 160 students from various departments attended the workshop. It was indeed an interactive & thought provoking workshop.

The grand Valedictory of ELA was held on 4th March 2016. Dr.Sudharsan Padmanabhan, Associate Professor, Dept. of Humanities and Social Science, IIT Madras was the chief guest. Dr.M.Selvaraj, Principal in his address, urged the students to realize the importance of English language in the present scenario. Dr.Gunita Arun Chandhok, Director, motivated & congratulated the students for bringing laurels by participating in intra & inter collegiate competitions. The chief guest in his address highlighted how English serves as window to world, as link language and also as global language. He delivered a bilingual speech that had the audience spell bound. Later he distributed the prizes to winners of various competitions conducted by ELA during 2016.

S. Divya of  I B. COM (HONS) participated in  Inter-collegiate Essay writing competition organized by Mahaveer Foundation and awarded I –Prize (Cash award of Rs50,000 and certificate).

2017-18.

Our Students took part in an Inter-Collegiate English Oratorical Competition (on current Topics) organized by The Mylapore Academy, Chennai on 28th, 29th and 30th July2017.

In 28th G.Vignesh Kumar of   III Bcs won I PRIZE   and

Srivastv of   III B.com (HONS)   won   III PRIZE. (Around 40 students from leading city colleges participated.)

In 30th English Oratorical A.Sharun of   III B.com (Gen) won I prize   and

Ramanujam of   III B.com (B.M) won II Prize.

Our college won Silver Rolling Trophy .

Sharun  of Final B.Com won I place in JAM & III PLACE in Stress Interview organized by Ehiraj college, Advait of III vis.com WON II place in JAM &II place  in Stress Interview. They got overall Runners-up. IN spoof Rahul of III Bsc & his team won I place and got OVERALL TROPHY.

Department Association Activities

The Department is actively involved in conducting various activities such as

 Guest lecturers ,Workshops, Seminars and Competitions under English Literary Association (ELA) since 2000 and has a distinguished record of several prominent dignitaries invited to share their knowledge and experience with students.

 The pivotal OBJECTIVE of ELA is

  • To provide an opportunity for proper exposure to English outside the classroom.
  • To tap the talent of creativity through Competitions.
  • To foster them to face the challenging world.
