History

Banking system plays a very significant role in the economy of a country.The phenomenal growth of  the banking and finance industry, lucrative careeer prospects in this field and their increasing  contribution to the development of Indian economy has brought out the need for the establishment of B.Com(Bank Management) as a separate department by the University of Madras. This course as per the demands of the student community was started in the academic year 2015-16 in Guru Nanak College in Shift II.

This course familiarises the students with the subjects related to commerce such as financial and corporate accounting, cost and management accounting, corporate laws and financial services with an intense emphasis on banking technology and its regulatory mechanism, banking communication, international banking, global awareness in banking systems and banking law. One month bank internship for the final year undergraduate students is made compulsory to get hands-on experience before actually entering the job market.

  1. To assist the first generation learners and the less priviliged student community to identify their potential and make the fullest use of it.
  2. To impart value education, skill development and tolerance education to face the real career world after graduation
  3. To enable them to become industry (Specially, Banking and Finance) ready through conduct of Bank exam coaching classes and internships in the college premises.

Vision

To make every student to  become competent, independent, committed, humane and socially responsible graduates (most probably bankers) with good communication skills.

Objective

  • To identify the hidden potential in students and capitalise them for their benefit  and  betterment .
  • To encourage participation  than winning in intra and inter-collegiate events.
  • To bring out humanistic  development in students.
  • To develop a sense of positive  attitude,belongingness,empathy,respect,listening, punctuality&understanding  among students.
  • To make them employable by imparting  skills required by the industry
  • To build self-discipline and self-confidence that leads to emotional  stability which  is the need of the hour

Program Outcomes

The department offers an undergraduate programme in commerce, with specialization in Bank Management. The duration is three years and is offered to students who have completed their higher secondary or equivalent qualifying examination with commerce and accountancy with preferably maths as compulsory subjects.

The bank management graduates have many options after successfully completing their UG course. They

  1. Can pursue any commerce related PG courses (MBA/M.Com/MA(BM) etc.)
  2. Can choose any of the professional courses like CA/ACS/ACCA/ICWA etc.
  3. Can go in for employment in the banks/financial institutions/any other accounting firm  in India and abroad.
  4. Can do independent practice or placement in firms after completing their professional course.

This course also focusses on imparting the much needed skills like communication skills, presentation skills, technical skills, etc., through specially designed skill development programmes.

Department Association Activities

1.    A  session on “Opportunities in Higher Education” was lead by Murali S, Head-Training and Placement ,TIME institute. He gave an insight into the various learning avenues in MBA, CA and Bank exams for the students. 

2.    An informative  workshop on “Basics of Banking” on 9th February 2016 was conducted by Mr. Ashok Kumar, Senior Manager cum Principal, Regional staff training college, Canara Bank 

3.    A guest lecture on “Demand for and supply of Money” on 4th March 2016 was organised. The resource person for the same is Ms. T. Vaidegi,Asst. Prof. Asan School of Management, Chennai.

4.    A seminar on "Communication can make or break careers" on 5th of March 2016 was conducted by Ms. Aruna Das, Founder/Director, Catalyst Image Consulting, Chennai

5.    A seminar on "Demonetisation- a boon or bane" was organized  on 1st December 2016. The resource person was Mr.Sudhakar Ponnurangam, HR Manager, Allsec technologies.

6.    A guest lecture was delivered by Mrs. Sowmya, Head, Department of B.Com(Hons) on Company Law as per the amended Companies Act, 2013 on 28th March 2017.

7.    The department of B.Com (BM) arranged a session on "Opportunities in Higher Education" for the students of II BM. Murali S, Head-Training and Placement ,TIME institute gave an insight into the various learning avenues in  MBA,CA and Bank exams for the students. The session was an informative and useful one.

8.    A seminar on “Marketing skills in Health sector” on 30th June 2017 at A/C Seminar hall  was conducted by  Dr. Satheesh, Director-Planning and Resource Management, Corporate Health India, Chennai  for the students of B.Com-BM,MM,HONS and ISM. The session highlighted the importance of communication and marketing skills required by the corporates in common and health industry in particular.

9. The department oraganised bank exam coaching classes (a workshop comprising of 40 Hours-6 subjects) in college premises through Race coaching institute pvt. Ltd. during the month of September 2017 to enable the commerce students to take up the bank/other Govt. jobs 

10. The department of Bank Managaement has conducted Intra-Department and Inter-Collegiate Competitions to tap the innate talents  of the students. The Intra-Department competitions conducted on 28th September 2017  are:

  3. Solo Singing
  4. Solo Dance
  5. Stnd up
  6. Channel Surfing

The students and the judges had a nice interactive sessions and the prizes for the same were given on the valedictory function of the department.
The Inter-Collegiate fest “BANCAVE 2k17” was conducted on 7th October 2017 with the Inauguration of the  Department Association “Bough Moola”-Management of money by Smt. S.Vijayalakshmi, Deputy General Manager,NABARD by the lighting of the kuthuvilakku. Principal , Guru Nanak College welcomed the Chief Guest and the gathering and gave the welcome address. Students from various city colleges participated and the overall trophy was won by RKM Vivekananda College.

There was a blend of co-curricular and extra-curricular events namely:

  2. Paper presentation
  3. Case Study
  4. War on waste(Making Products from waste)
  5. Adzap
  6. Channel surfing.

The fest came to a close with the valedictory function on the same day at 4.00 p.m. Director, Guru Nanak College gave the valedictory address and distributed the prizes for the intra-department and the inter-collegiate competitions.

11. The department of B.Com(Bank Management) organised a session on “Highlights of CA course” under the  career counselling programme organised by the Southern India Regional Council of the  Institute of Chartered Accountants of India on 6th of December 2017 at A/C Seminar hall. The resource persons were CA Hemavathy, CA Sathyamoorthy,  Mr.Paramasivam and Mr.v Ravichandran.
They spoke about the modus operandi of doing a CA course and discussed at length about the career opportunities by highlighting the course contents.The session was highly motivating and inspiring for the students.The students of the Departments of BM, MM,ISM, HONS,BBA,GEN and CS attended the programme.It was followed by an interactive question answer session.
