Department of Computer Applications (M.C.A)

History

The MCA Program is one of the potential Post Graduate departments in our college incepted in the year 2008 with a sanctioned intake of 60 students. This course is approved by AICTE and is affiliated to University of Madras, Tamil Nadu. 
MCA department had produced 100% results in most of the University Semester examinations from the first batch.  Students have secured high marks and some of our students have got University ranks. Corporate Companies visited the Department to enrich the students in the growing technical trends in the software industry, which has enabled the students to get placed in top Software Companies across the globe. The department frequently invites resource persons from top IT corporate to conduct seminars, workshops and guest lecturers that facilitate the students to enrich their knowledge with the latest technologies that stand in the field of Information Technology. Apart from the academic excellence our Students have performed exceptionally well in various extracurricular activities held outside the college , Also most of our students are placed well in  reputed top Information Technology companies in various parts of the globe. The department now offers MCA Course both in Regular Stream (duration: 3 years) and Lateral Entry Stream exclusively for B.Sc. (Comp. Sc.), BCA , B.Sc. I.T. ( duration : 2 years).The main focus of this program is to make the students industry ready and prepare them for over all development in their carrier

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department offers both Regular Stream  ( duration : 3 years) and Lateral Entry Stream ( duration : 2 years).

Master of Computer Applications at Guru Nanak College is composed of core subjects organized for  developing the skill of students in ability to generate creative solutions and foster team-oriented, professionalism with effective communication in their careers.

 Electives are chosen in areas such as Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Python Programming, R Programming, MATLAB Programming and other latest technologies allow students to explore areas of individual interest.

The department further aims at emerging as a centre for Research in Computer Science with facilities for offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.

  • Periodic Technical Seminars and guest Lectures organized for updating the Students knowledge.
  • Workshops on important technologies conducted to aid the students to get hands on experience.
  • Students exposure to real world is improved by encouraging them to participate in various symposiums held on other colleges and to win prizes.
  • Staff Enrichment Programmes are regularly attended by staff members to understand new methodologies in teaching and improve the student community.
  • Students are assisted to get main project Internship with placement.

To guide the students in Computer Applications and help them to become creative develop an attitude to find answers for problems they face in real world in their industry without losing ethical character of life.

Objective

PEO 1 : Enable students to understand and  analyze real world scenarios and to  design software that are technically excellent and economically feasible .
PEO 2 : Aid students to achieve recognition as an individual or team member; by adopting ethics and professionalism and communicate effectively .
PEO 3 : To develop employability skills among students  by  Bridging the gap between Industry and Academics and  Train students to meet industry needs.

Program Outcomes

MCA graduates who will have successful careers based on their understanding of formal and practical methods of Application Development using the concepts of computer programming, software and design principles. They can work in different domain across globe. The curriculum of this course helps in follow aspects: 

  • MCA graduates who will exhibit effective work ethics and be able to adapt to the challenges of a dynamic job environment.
  • After few years of experience they can be an entrepreneur and also employability to others.
  • They can also focus in the Research and Development areas and work with different R &D Centers across globe.
  • They can work in different government establishments where computer are used.

Department Association Activities

FRESHER’S DAY CELEBRATION

  • On 21st August 2017, Fresher’s Day was celebrated by the MCA Department of our College at Guru Ramdass A/C Seminar hall in a grand manner.
  • The Celebration was started at 10.30 a.m. with College Prayer rendered by Shri. Satpal Singh assisted by Shri. Navjeet Singh.
  • Dr. P.V. Kumaraguru, Deputy Director and HOD of MCA welcomed the dignitaries and newly admitted students of MCA.
  • Dr. M.Selvaraj, Principal presided the celebration and motivated the students to prosper in their life.
  • Dr. Marlene Morais, Former Principal of GNC was the Chief Guest of the event.
  • After Felicitation, Dr. Marlene Morais gave a motivational speech to the gathering. She remembered the memorable events of olden days when the department was started. She also appreciated the efforts taken by the MCA Department to get the permission for Lateral Entry from the University of Madras and congratulated the MCA Team for the success reaped.  She also motivated the students by citing the prospects of MCA. She encouraged the students to make their stay in GNC a fruitful one.
  • Mrs. S. Nirmaladevi, Assistant Professor in MCA Department thanked the gathering and the memorable event came to an end at 12.30 p.m.

 

INDUSTRIAL VISIT REPORT

On 26th September, 2017, 42 students and 3 staff members of Department of MCA made an Industrial Visit to The NCR Corporation (originally National Cash Register).

The NCR Corporation (originally National Cash Register) is an American computer hardware, software and electronics company that makes self-service kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, automated teller machines, check processing systems, barcode scanners, and business consumables. They also provide IT maintenance support services.

NCR was founded in 1884 and acquired by AT&T in 1991. A restructuring of AT&T in 1996 led to NCR's re-establishment January 1,1997 as a separate company and involved the spin-off of Lucent Technologies from AT&T. NCR is the only AT&T spin-off company that has retained its original name.

The company provides services like  E-business, Education, IT infrastructure services, Managed services, Payment, Retail, Self-service.

The Products of the company are  Self-service kiosks, Point of sale, automated teller machines, retail store automation, services.

Mr. Rajkumar, the Corporate Trainer for ATM machines across Tamil Nadu explained us about the working procedure of the ATM machine with a live demonstration.  Students were exposed to how an ATM machine is built and how it works internally. He had also explained about how the hardware and software components of ATM work synergistically.
