English (Shift II)



The Department of English (Shift II) organized an Intercollegiate Mega English Fest, “ELOQUENZ 2K16 – 1st Edition”, under the English Literary Association (ELA) on 21st July 2016.

Dr. S. Armstrong, Prof.& Head, Dept. of English, University of Madras was the chief guest. There was an overwhelming response from 170 students from 30 city colleges. The eminent Professors from various city colleges partnered in judging the array of events. The overall Winner’s trophy was won by Loyola College and the overall Runners trophy was bagged by Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science.English Literary Association conducted a workshop on “English for Employment”. The valedictory function of ELA also commemorating Shakespeare’s 450th birth anniversary this year was held on 23rd February 2017. The Chief Guest,Dr. Shrimathi Venkatalakshmi, Head,, Department of English, Anna University, shared her deep thoughts and valuable lessons that she learnt from her guru and mentors and stressed on the importance of developing skill set alongside communicative skills

An edifying Word play competition and Presentation Skills Competition was organised by the English Literary Association on 12th January 2016 and 19th January respectively. Workshop on “Power of Pleasing Personality (Jobs Ready)” by Image Consulting Business Institute was organised on 10thFebruary 2016 which was presided over by Ms.KP Radhikaa Nair,&.Sasikala, Head &Consultants, ICBI wherein around 120 final year students participated actively.

To succeed in any career, the four skills namely Listening (L), Speaking(S), Reading(R) and Writing (W) [in short LSRW]must be present in every student. The Department of English, conducted a workshop on LSRW skills for the first year students on 24th of July 2015. The resource person Sri. Kanteesh Kumar, CEO, COMMUWAY highlighted the importance of having LSRW skills and why students must develop these skills to succeed in any career.

 History of the Department:

The department of English (Evening college ) started functioning since 1981-82,when the college offered B.Com course with one section, and added the second section in 1982-83. By the year 1983-84, the college started offering B.A corporate secretary ship, and in 1986-87 B.Sc Mathematics and many other courses subsequently.

The Department of English continue to extend its valuable teaching of UG courses since 1981.Apart from teaching foundation English the Department handled Business Communication for B.Com till 2002.

Soft skills for PG Courses:

Courses on soft skills and Internship, common to all PG Programmes were introduced with effect from 2007-08.

Courses on soft skills are intended to improve the communication skills and personality development of the students.

All PG students shall undergo courses on soft skills such as

(1) Language and Communication in English
(2) Spoken and presentation skills
(3) Personality enrichment
(4) Computing Skills and
(5) Foreign Language skills in addition to subject core and elective courses.

For two years Master’s Degree Programme, a candidate must undergo a minimum of 4 courses S(4×2=8 credits) from the courses on soft skills.

The Department of English handles (wef 2007-08) the courses like Language and Communication, Essentials of spoken and presentation skills, personality enrichment for evaluating the various communication skills of students through internal assessment (for 40 marks) (Objective tests, oral Test, assignments, paper presentation, written test etc) and external examination (for 60 marks) (through tools like reading skills, Listening and speaking skills, followed by group discussions, interview etc)

Soft Skills for UG Courses:

The syllabi including soft skills for the UG Degree courses of the I and II semesters (i.e First year only) as per the format given by the Tamil Nadu State council for Higher Education (TANSCHE),Chennai, introduced with effect from the academic year 2008-09 and has been functioning since then.

The courses like Language and communication skills and spoken and presentation skills are conducted for I & II semester (for I year) respectively, since 2008.

The Department of English is headed by B.Pramila since 2000 and (as HOD from 2002) with faculty strength of six at present. Apart from regular work, the staff of this department is actively involved in conducting cultural and competitions of various events. It motivates students of all sections admitted, to improve communication skills for the better performance of their curriculum. The Department helps in the preparation of text for intra communication, public address , compeering etc .The staff of this department play a major role in coordinating whenever any media coverage approach for teleshooting for their programmes.In addition to the above, the department encourages students to participate various events like oratorical; extempore; essay writing; expresso ; word play ; puzzle power etc to test the various skills of the students. For the effective execution of the above said the department started its Association namely ELA (English Literary Association during 2006-07.It held its inaugural function on 26.02.2007 with Dr.T.G.Joseph ,Head Dept of English (Day College) (as the Chief Guest.. From then onwards, the Association encourages the students to improve their language skills in English through various activities. The department also continues to have a day long workshop on communication skills through personality development as part of Association activities.

One such workshop on “Communication Skills” was conducted during march 2007 with Dr.P.ArunaDevi, Sr.Lecturer,Institute of Distance Education ,Madras University, as the resource personnel also organized a guest Lecture on “ English for Communication “ by Dr.Devaki Reddy from Dept of Humanities, I I T MADRAS as the guest speaker. The Department continues to hold competitions such as slogan writing, poetry reading, Tongue twister, word play, creative writing to test and tap the oral and written skills of the students. In addition, the English Association has been sending the Anglophiles among students to participate in literary competitions organized within and outside the college.
