The Guru Nanak College was established in the year 1971 as a Unit of Guru Nanak Educational Society to mark the 500th birthday of the great Shri Guru Nanak Devji, founder of the Sikh Religion. The objective of the college is to spread the ideals of universal brotherhood, oneness of God, communal harmony and welfare to all communities. The College is being run as a minority community college within the meaning of articles 29 and 30 of the Indian Constitution.

The college provides a quiet and ideal setting amidst natural surroundings. It is located on the Velachery-Tambaram Road within a verdant 22 acre campus gifted by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the development of an Arts & Science College.

The institution admits students as per the government norms. 30% of the total strength in each course is reserved for women students. Admission is open to trans-genders also. The College is now ranked among the top ten colleges in Chennai.

The Guru Nanak Educational Society was established in 1970 by the Founder President Late Lt. Col. G.S. Gill, who was the first Indian Inspector General of Prisons, along with Late Padmashri P.N Dhawan as the General Secretary and Sardar Manohar Singh Sabherwal as the Treasurer. The registered office is located at Guru Nanak College premises, Velachery, Chennai – 42.

The objectives of the society is to impart education to all segments of the society and the motto is very rightly stated as “Pro Bono Publico”, which is the last sentence of the Sikh Prayer “Sarbat Ka Bhalla”, which means “For the benefit of all”.

General Secretary

The Guru Nanak Educational Society is the apex body which has founded and manages the following institutions.

  1. Guru Nanak College – established in 1971 as a men’s college and has today grown into a full-fledged co-educational arts and science college with 22 UG courses and 8 PG Courses and Research leading to Ph.D. catering to the needs of more than 5000 students and 300 teaching and non-teaching staff.
  2. Guru Nanak Matriculation Higher Secondary School wa started in 1979. It is located adjacent to the college campus and has a strength of 2100 students from all strata of the society and 100 staff. The school is headed by Mrs. S. Bhuvaneshwari, Principal.
  3. The Guru Nanak Institute of Management GNIM comprises of two Departments, the MBA and MCA Departments. This institute started in 2005, is affiliated to the University of Madras and is also approved by the All India Council of Technical Education
  4. The Gill Research Institute (GRI) is an autonomous institute affiliated to the University of Madras and was established in 2005. The Institute is recognized as Centre for Research in Insect and Plant Life.

On behalf of the governing council, The General Secretary and Correspondent Sardar Manjit Singh Nayar takes care of the day-to-day administration of the above institutions.

Dr. M. Selvaraj

M.Sc, Ph.d

  • Dr. Selvaraj assumed the post of Principal of the college since 1st June, 2013.  He is the 10th Principal in the Succession.
  • He was the Associate Professor of Chemistry and has nearly three decades of teaching experience.
  • He completed his Ph.D. in 1992 and his area of specialization is Analytical Chemistry.
  • Currently Dr. Selvaraj is undertaking a Major Research Project in Chemistry sponsored by UGC.
  • He has published 6 research articles in the renowned journals and he is a Ph.d.  Supervisor for the University of Madras.
  • Dr. Selvaraj has many Academic- Administration experience also.
  • He was the Senate Member of Madurai Kamaraj University and elected member of the Academic Council of the University of Madras.
  • Presently, Dr. Selvaraj is the member of Board of studies of Periyar University, Salem and 3 other Autonomous Colleges of Chennai.
  • He had served as NSS officer and Deputy Warden of the Hostel for more than a decade in each assignment
  • He was the Vice President of Student’s Council, IQAC Co-ordinator of the College and has served as a Member in various Administrative Committees of the College in the past.
  •  He is currently the “Syndicate Member” of the University of Madras

Chief Administrative Officer

Mr.B.Balasubramani Joined Guru Nanak College as Chief Administrative Officer on 21st June 2012. Before joining Guru Nanak College, he was working as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chennai. During the year 2005, when tsunami hit Chennai, he has done excellent service to all the affected areas

He has done lot of reforms in Traffic Management in Chennai City. As Principal of Police Recruitment School in Vellore, he has given basic training to 342 police constables in two batches. His 35 years of service is marked with devotion towards duty and hard work.

During his service he has earned 4 MSE, 20 GSE, 5 Money rewards, 10 commendations and he is awarded President Medal for Meritorious service. He is in-charge of Administration, Security and Estate affairs of the Guru Nanak College.

Chief Operation Officer

Prior to joining Guru Nanak College as Chief Operations Officer he had served in the Indian Air Force for 25 glorious years. He is a graduate in Economics from Madras University and a Dual Post Graduate in Management (Operations & HR) from Symbiosis Institute at Pune.

He is a qualified Interviewing Officer trained by Defence Institute of Psychological Research , under DRDO at New Delhi. He is a certified authority in “Human Error Prevention Methodology”from Institute of Flight Saftey, New Delhi. He is competent in the field of Disaster Management from Institute of Military Engineering College, Pune and certified in “Suicide Prevention” from Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore.

He had been on deputation to Royal Bhutan Air Force for his outstanding professional and public relation. He received Chief of Air Staff commendation for “Exceptional Operational duties” during Kargil and commended by Commander-in-chief towards “Dedication and Devotion to duty” during Tsunami and Bhuj Earthquake relief operations.

Dr.P.V.Kumaraguru, , Possessing 23 years of PG teaching experience, in the colleges affiliated to University of Madras, also Heading MCA Department from the inception of the course in the year 2008 at GNC. Published research articles in the Scopus indexed international journals. His area of research is in Machine learning and Process mining.

He is a research guide and member of doctoral committee for scholars perusing P.hD in various Universities importing research in the field of computer science. His areas of specialization are Data mining, Data analytics, networks and artificial intelligence. He is the member of college academic council, planning and evaluation committee, Internal Quality Assurance Cell and Sports committee.

Dr. Shakila M.K.

Dr. Shakilahas been associated with many Colleges and B-Schools since 2002 for Training Faculty members and students. She has handled Online Virtual Classes for Employed Students of CII Institute of Logistics.

She has presented more than 20 papers in International and national conferences. She has published many papers in refereed UGC approved Journals. Her competencies include Training and development, Performance appraisal management, conflict management and personality grooming.

She has been a resource person to Workshops conducted for Faculty members on Soft skills for Trainers, Teaching methodologies, Collaborative Training, Case Analysis, Article writing, Institutional Brand building and Resource group formation & implementation. Her area of expertise and interest is Retail management.

She has won Young Faculty Award from Centre for Advanced Research and Design, Venus International Foundation by 2015.
