University of Madras granted affiliation for 6 sections of PUC and 3 UG courses in Mathematics, Chemistry and Economics

3 UG courses (English, Zoology and B.Com.) were added

Formal inauguration of Guru Nanak College by the then Governor Sri K.K. Shah, in the presence of the then Education Minister, Dr. V R. Nedunchezhian

The Gurudwara was inaugurated.

Establishment of Guru Nanak Evening College in the Self - Financing stream (presently named Shift II).

A Research Institution named Gill Research Institute (GRI) was inaugurated by Dr. A. Gnanam, the then Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras, to conduct research on Life Sciences.

New Library Building was constructed with funding from UGC

The Institution opened its portals to women students in UG courses also and became a full-fledged co-educational institution, though women were admitted in the PG courses from the inception.

Ph.D. Programme in Commerce commenced

New Canteen building with funding from UGC was made operational.

Silver Jubilee of the college was celebrated with renowned scientist Dr.M.S.Swaminathan, MSSRF as Chief Guest.

Job oriented Computer programmes in Tally, Certificate courses in Sales management and Salesmanship were introduced as Self-financing courses

IGNOU Study Centre became functional in the College campus

NAAC Accreditation B++ was awarded for 5 years

B.Sc. Visual Communication, B.Sc. E-media and M.Sc. Chemistry were introduced in the Evening College

Three Add-on courses were introduced in the Department of Commerce in the Day College
