Guru Nanak College

The Guru Nanak College, (GNC) in a lush green 25-acre campus, cradled between the Raj Bhavan and the campus of the IIT-Madras, facing the Guru Nanak Salai, is located in Velachery, South Chennai – the gateway to the IT expressway of Tamil Nadu.

Guru Nanak College was established in 1971 to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Devji – the founder of the Sikh religion, by the Guru Nanak Educational Society (GNES). (Late) Lt. Col. G.S. Gill was the founder President, (Late) Padmashree P. N. Dhawan was the General Secretary and (Late) Sardar Manohar Singh Sabherwal was the Treasurer. This yeoman service of a small community of Sikhs, who made Tamil Nadu their home, after they left Punjab following the partition is historic.

The noble mission of the GNES is to provide quality education to all, irrespective of socio-economic background, caste, creed or religion. This is in keeping with the motto of the College 'Pro Bono Publico' which is a translation of Sikh prayer ‘Sarbat ka bhalla’ meaning for the 'Benefit of All'. The Sikhs are a minority in the State and yet the Management does not claim any concessions extended to minority institutions. It is run and regulated like a non-minority institution in service of the majority community

Our Founder

Lt. Col. G.S. Gill

Lt. Col. G.S. Gill was among the first of the prominent Punjabis who settled in the city and made important contributions to it. Born on September 16, 1893, Gurdial Singh Gill was from Faridkot, Punjab. Sent to England to study law in 1912, he opted for medicine and moved to Edinburgh University from where he graduated in 1919. In 1923, Dr. Gill came to India where he joined the Indian Medical Service (IMS) and became Lt. Col. G.S. Gill, IMS. With the IMS being abolished in 1930, he moved to prison service and became Inspector General of Prisons, Madras, which meant all goals in the Presidency were under his administration. Post-Independence, Lt. Col. Gill opted to stay on in Madras. He was instrumental in establishing the Punjab Association in 1937. He also managed to solicit donations and supervise the construction of the Sri Guru Nanak Sat Sangh Sabha (Gurudwara Sahib, T.Nagar) in 1952. Lt. Col. Gill founded the Guru Nanak Educational Society in 1970 and the foundation of the Guru Nanak College was laid in January 1971 on the land which was granted for the purpose by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Donations by prominent Sikh families and the Maharani Vidyavathi Trust funded the establishment of the College. He was the founder President of the Guru Nanak College and he took active interest in the functioning of the College till his demise in 1982

Motto

The motto of the College is "Pro Bono Publico" which is the translation – (“Sarbat ka Bhalla”). It is the final term in the Sikh prayer called Ardas. The term means ‘For the benefit of all’ or literally ‘may everyone prosper’.

Vision

The vision of the College as enshrined by the founders is to be a leading Institution of Excellence in Higher Education by providing holistic, quality education to the aspiring youth and the needy, especially the ones from the less privileged sections of the society.

The vision of the college is elucidated as follows:

  • Motivate the staff and students to imbibe and practice the 3 cardinal principles of Sikhism.
    • Naam Japo: Chant the name of ‘True God’. Meditating on God’s name to gain control over the five evils – lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.
    • Vand Chhako: With the grace of the Lord, whatever you have received, share it with the needy and then consume.
    • Kirat karo: Means make a living honestly. One should not exploit others to enjoy self-happiness.

  • Put in place a detailed and systematic maintenance mechanism for the campus, assets including buildings, laboratories, computing systems, networks, equipment and the like. The maintenance envisages an efficient, eco-friendly waste treatment measures such as reduce, recycle and re-use.

Autonomy

The College was conferred academic Autonomous status by the UGC in 2015, with focus on creating conducive environment of liberalization and need based curriculum

This gives the College the superiority of powers for designing the curriculum for all the courses offered by the College. Additionally, the flexibility of frequently revising the syllabus, in keeping with the demands of the industry and also better implementation of our mission/core values. GNC has a value-embedded curriculum (possible because of autonomy) and has one whole unit in the ‘Value Education’ subject on ‘the teachings of Guru Nanak Devji’.

About GNES

The GNES has under its wings besides the College, the Guru Nanak Matriculation Hr. Sec. School, Swabhodhini (School for children with special abilities), the Guru Nanak Centre for Skill Development (GNCSD), the Guru Nanak Medical Centre, Twinning and Distance Education Programme of the Pondicherry University – a Central University.

The GNCSD, Medical Centre and Pondicherry University Twinning Programme were launched in 2019 as an integral part of the 550th Birth Anniversary celebration of Guru Nanak Devji.

The GNES administers all these institutions by an elected Governing Council of 20 members and a President. Presently, Sardar Rajinder Singh Bhasin is the President. The Executive authority and day-to-day administrative responsibilities, vests with the General Secretary and Correspondent. All the members of the Governing Council are businessmen of great repute and standing. Their involvement in running the institution is purely social work. The visible growth and development of the college is largely because of the service-orientation of the Management

Governing Council Members

The Governing Council of the Guru Nanak Educational Society comprises twenty members elected by the General Body once every three years and is headed by a President. The administrative responsibility of all the units run by the Society is vested in the General Secretary & Correspondent. All members of the Governing Council are businessmen of good standing and are involved in various other social service initiatives too. Their role in the policy making of the Society and the institutions is driven with the motto of service in the cause of education.

Sardar Manjit Singh Nayar

Sardar Manjit Singh Nayar took up the mantle of administering Guru Nanak college (Autonomous) and Guru Nanak Matriculation Higher Secondary School, run by Guru Nanak Educational Society® as the General Secretary and Correspondent since September 2008. During his stewardship the college was re-accredited as “A” Grade by National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) in 2013 and soon to follow was conferment of Autonomous status by the UGC in 2015. Once again in 2022 the college was Accredited in its third cycle with “A++” Grade by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.68.

Understanding the need for infrastructure for the expanding academic activities of the college, the governing council under his initiative constructed an academic block with an area of 56,000 sq. ft, ground + 3 floors, named Guru Harkrishan Block in 2015.

In 2018, yet another state-of-the-art academic Block having 24 class rooms and a centralized air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of 873 and a floor area of 52.000 sq. ft named Guru Amar Das Block and Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Auditorium was built. This block was inaugurated by our Honorable President, Shri Ramnath Kovind in the presence of Honorable Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri Banwarilal Purohit in 2018.

True to the college’s declared motto “Pro Bono Publico” the benevolent General Secretary and Correspondent introduced the “Langar” scheme – providing free mid-day meals to the needy economically weaker students of the College.

Guru Nanak Center for skill development was established in May 2019, on the occasion of the 550th Birth Anniversary of the patron saint Guru Nanak Devji. The Guru Nanak Centre for Research and the Guru Nanak Media Centre were also set up by him. Both of which have also started exclusive You-tube Channels to reach out to the students and society as e-learning portals.

Guru Nanak Educational Society entered into a memorandum of understanding with Pondicherry Central University to offer distance education course under twinning program from the academic year 2019-2020.

Recognizing the yeoman service rendered by our college the corporation of Chennai / Local Administrative Department of Tamil Nadu has re-christened the Velachery main Road as “Guru Nanak Salai”.

During the recent Pandemic COVID 19 the College under his leadership organized a highly appreciated camp for migrant guest workers from Orissa and Assam on the campus. The camp reached out in all to 3000 guest workers and ensured their smooth return to their Home States. Two of the School and College buildings and required facilities were extended to the Tamil Nadu Government for setting up Covid Quarantine Centres, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Home Guard Activities

Sardar Manjit Singh Nayar was appointed as Area commander from 2003 and then promoted as Assistant Commandant General in Chennai city Home Guards from 2005 till date. Attended Disaster Management course at Anna Institute of Management during the year 2004.

Extending his commitment to the societal call, he is guiding multifarious activities assisting the regular police department in providing law & order bandobust duties and also rescue operations during natural calamities. Special mention must be made of the voluntary services spear-headed by him during the Tsunami during 2005 and the Chennai Floods in the year 2015.

Recognizing his commendable services, he was honored with the award of Presidents Medal by the Honorable President of India for Meritorious Service rendered by him in Tamil Nadu home guards in the year 2018.

Besides, he was given a special award for mobilizing and deploying a record number of 3000 Home Guard personnel for the election duty in the incident free election in 2019 by the commissioner of police Dr. A. K. Viswanathan I.P.S.,

Minority Commission Member

Recognizing his undaunting service to the Sikhs (Minority) community Tamil Nadu, he is empaneled as member of the Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission to guide the policy makers of Tamil Nadu government, for three successive terms. Travelled across the State for the welfare of minorities and focused on implementing Prime Minister’s New 15 Point Programme for the welfare of minority communities

Guru Nanak College Advisor, Dr. Marlene Morais

Dr. Marlene Morais has served the Guru Nanak College since 1977, in various capacities as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Head of Commerce Department and First Woman Principal of Guru Nanak College.

During her long tenure in the College she has shouldered additional responsibilities, such as, Staff in-charge of Women Students Forum, Chairperson of the Women grievance cell, Convener of the Student Welfare Committee, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Silver Jubilee Celebration of GNC, Editor of the College Magazine, faculty of MBA course of IGNOU, and Staff Advisor of Alumni Association.

As Principal during 2010 to 2013, she has been instrumental in Restructuring Shift-II administration. Twenty-Six Government Aided teaching vacancies were filled up during her tenure as the Head of the institution.

The GURU SHIKSHA programme, annual inter-school and inter-collegiate oratorical competitions on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Devji was started by her and has now assumed greater dimensions.

As Principal she submitted the college for NAAC Re-accreditation (second cycle) and the College was reaccredited with ‘A’ Grade for the first time in 2013. She also submitted the proposal for academic autonomy in 2013 and the College was granted Autonomy by the UGC in the year 2015.

She has co-authored two textbooks Business Communication for UG Commerce and Corporate Finance for MBA classes. Under her guidance and supervision 11 Research Scholars have obtained their Ph.D. Degrees, in the Faculty of Commerce, from the University of Madras.

She has obtained and completed a Major Research Project funded by the UGC during 2012-2015 on “Total Quality Management in Higher Education Institutions - a model study” as Principal Investigator.

On her retirement and completion of her academic research work, she was invited to serve as Advisor to the Management from January 2019 onwards. During her stint as Advisor, she assisted the Management in setting up the Guru Nanak Centre for Skill Development (GNCSD), with a view to enhance the course content of the various disciplines and also enhancing the employability and entrepreneurial skills of the students. The Centre also promotes training and counseling for entrepreneurship. Her efforts and inputs for improving the administration of the college in keeping with the tech-based scenario of the modern times, resulted in the launching of the Integrated Management System (IMS) by the General Secretary and Correspondent, with the use of in-house talent and resources. Backed by intensive study of the academic administration scenario across the country and abroad, and in keeping with the suggestions made by the NAAC Peer team, the School System of academic administration was introduced during the year 2019-20

About Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Sikh Saints

The epoch of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism spreads from the birth of Guru Nanak Devji in 1469 through the life of Guru Gobind Singhji. Guru Gobind Singhji passed the title of Guru to the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Nanak Dev ji - 1469 - 1539

  • Guru Nanak Devji - “A True Spiritual Teacher”, Founder of Sikh religion.
  • His message is “God is one, God is Love, and God is unity. All human beings are equal in the eyes of God. Devotion to God and service to mankind, irrespective of caste, creed or color are the duties of everyone”.
  • He also introduced ‘Guru ka Langar”, the common kitchen where food is served to everyone without any discrimination.

Guru Angad Dev ji - 1539 - 1552

  • Guru Angad Dev ji, second of the ten Gurus.
  • He compiled the life history of Guru Nanak Dev ji titled ; Janam Sakhi. He invented and introduced “the Gurmukhi- written form of Punjabi script”.
  • He established the first Sikh School.

Guru Amar Das Sahib - 1552 - 1574

  • Guru Amar Das Sahib, third of the ten Gurus.
  • He introduced the “Anand Karaj” - marriage ceremony for the Sikhs.
  • He completely abolished the Sati and Purdah system among the Sikhs.

Guru Ram Das ji - 1574-1581

  • Guru Ram Das ji , fourth of the ten Gurus.
  • He is the founder of “Harmandir Sahib, the city of Amritsar”.
  • He started the construction of the famous Golden Temple in 1574.
  • He preached the significance of kirtan in Sikh worship.

Guru Arjan Dev ji - 1581 - 1606

  • Guru Arjan Dev ji, fifth of the ten Gurus.
  • He compiled the “Adi Granth”, the scriptures of Sikhs.
  • He completed the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
  • He became the first great martyr in Sikh history, hailed as Shaheedan-de-Sartaj (The crown of martyrs).

Guru Hargobind Sahib ji - 1606 - 1644

  • Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, sixth of the ten Gurus.
  • He is popularly known as ‘soldier saint’.
  • The first guru, a powerful warrior and trained the Sikhs to fight for defence.
  • He fought four battles with Mughal Emperors.

Guru Har Rai ji - 1644 - 1661

  • Guru Har Rai ji, seventh of the Ten Gurus.
  • He was a man of peace, he never disbanded the armed Sikh warriors who were earlier maintained by his grandfather Guru Hargobind.
  • He devoted his efforts to meditation and missionary work.

Guru Harkishan ji - 1661 - 1664

  • Guru Harkishanji, eighth of the Ten Gurus.
  • He became Guru at the age of five.
  • During the outbreak of smallpox epidemic, he cured people through his blessings.
  • He is popularly known as ‘ Bala Pir’ (Child Prophet).
  • He died at the age of 8.

Guru Tegh Bahadur ji - 1665- 1675

  • Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, ninth of the ten Gurus.
  • He is revered as “Hind Di Chadar”, Protector of the Humanity.
  • He established the town of Anandpur.

Guru Gobind Singh ji - 1675 - 1708

  • The last Guru, Prophet and Teacher of Sikhism.
  • He started the Khalsa Tradition.
  • He instructed the Sikh people to follow the rules of keeping ‘Five K’s” with them, Kesh (uncut hair), Kangha (a wooden comb for the hair), Kara (an iron bracelet), Kachera (a 100% cotton tieable undergarment, must not be elastic) and Kirpan (an iron dagger large enough to defend oneself with).
  • He gave “Singh” as the last name to all the Sikh men and “Kaur” to all the Sikh women. Singh means ‘a Lion’ and Kaur means ‘ Lioness’.
  • Last Sikh Guru in human form and he made the “Guru Granth Sahib” as the eleventh, eternal and everlasting Guru.

Guru Granth Sahib

  • It is considered the Supreme Spiritual Authority and Head of the Sikh religion, rather than any living person.
  • It is known as the Adi Granth, the scripture of the Sikhs.

GNC Campus Gurudwara

  • Gurdwara was inaugurated in 1971.
  • A Langar kitchen is attached to the College Gurudwara.
  • Mr Manjit Singh Nayar, General Secretary and Correspondent from his own funds constructed the Langar Kitchen and introduced the Langar (free meal scheme) for the students since 2014
  • Around 700 meals are served on every working day of the College

The Guru Nanak College has stepped into the Golden Jubilee with a sense of achievement and also a commitment to escalate the service to the student community with renewed vigor and dedication. Armed with a band of highly qualified and dynamic teaching and non-teaching staff, guided by an encouraging Management we are poised to scale greater heights. We have, 28 UG, 9 PG and 10 Ph.D. programmes, 27 skill/value added certificate courses, catering to a stunning strength of 6823 students on campus across two shifts. A few more courses which are in great demand and are industry-oriented certificate courses, are in the pipeline for the ensuing academic year. The College is Autonomous and hence the academic flexibility has been fully utilized to ensure excellent course content, embracing value education, inter-disciplinary electives, using the tools of experiential learning, blended learning and mentoring. The Placement Cell has a good record of imparting pre-placement training and providing placement opportunities across sectors. The present outgoing batch has witnessed more than 600 placements through campus recruitment in the academic year 2020-21, and much more off-campus. A big number of the outgoing graduates come back for post-graduate studies as well. The top companies where the students have been placed include Infosys, Wipro, TCS, HCL, EY, Byjus, Accenture, ICICI, Kotak, Spi global, Deloitte, Kaar and so on. The extension activities offered to the students are varied and contribute to their overall development.

On the lush green 25 acres of campus, we provide State-of-the-art facilities to all the scholars thereby creating an International Standard of Learner-friendly and Teacher-friendly environment, to create Industry-ready graduates, chiseled with values, ethics, soft skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, life and managerial skills, computing skills and job skills.

I wish to place on record as per the Education World Survey of 2021 the College is presently ranked 35th at the National level, 15th in the State and among Top 10 colleges in Chennai.

It is well-connected by roads and rail routes, avenues for part-time job and has the serenity required for pursuing all-round education. The college provides a springboard for the students to catapult into the society with confidence and knowledge to become great citizens of our Motherland India.

Dr. T K. Avvai Kothai, the 12th Principal in succession, has been serving the Guru Nanak College since 1990 starting as a Lecturer, Associate Professor, Head- PG & Research Department of Commerce and Dean - School of Commerce. She has been teaching U.G students for the past 37 years & P.G students for the past 30 years.

Her Professional skills include,

Career Guidance, Effective Counsellor and Motivator Bilingual Speaker (Tamil & English), Classroom Management, Extracurricular Activities and YouTube lectures on Accounting.

Her areas of Specialisation are Corporate Accounting, Accounting Standards , Organisational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Business Law, Marketing, Labour Welfare, Consumer Rights and Education, Research Methodology.

Her Research interests are Human Resource Management, Organisation Behaviour , Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Management.

In these 34 years in Guru Nanak College, apart from academics, her contribution in various committees like Students’ Discipline Committee, Ragging Redressal Committee and Teachers’ Association as an executive member has had a great impact on its development. She has also served as the staff advisor of the Women Students’ Forum (Women Development Cell) for 9 long years from 2010 to 2019 and have organised several programmes for the welfare and wellbeing of the women students. She has also been the President of the Teachers’ Association for 2 years.

In addition to these, she is also the Editorial Chief of the Guru Nanak Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, the Director of the Research & Development Cell and the Chairperson of the Internal Complaints Committee of the college. She is also the recipient of several awards like “Lifetime Achievement Award” (DK International Research Foundation, 2018), Lifetime Achievements National Award (IRDP GROUP OF JOURNALS, 2019), Achievement Award for Teaching and Research (GRABS AWARDS - 2019), National Lifetime Achievement Award (Avishkar Foundation, Solapur) . Guru Nanak College introduced the School System in January 2020 with the objective of development of qualitative academic curriculum and to foster inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary studies. Inter-disciplinary knowledge helps students in consolidating their learning by synthesizing ideas from varied perspectives; acquire alternate skill sets, leading to critical, creative and practical thinking. Six Schools of Excellence Comprising Languages, Humanities, Sciences, Commerce, Management Studies, and Information Technology have been introduced. Roles and Responsibilities of the Dean Academics

  • Working in close coordination with the Deans of the Schools of Excellence and other Officers, the Office of the Dean (Academics) is responsible for facilitating the College in carrying out academic planning, curriculum framing, design, implementation and schemes of evaluation.
  • The Office of the Dean (Academics) works with the IQAC and Deans of the Schools of Excellence to ensure academic quality and supports them in fostering excellence in teaching, learning and assessment through various means including preparation of lesson plans, robust mentor-mentee system and remedial support.

Role of Dean Academics

  • To contribute towards the preparation of the Academic Calendar and other related statutory documents.
  • To create awareness among the members of the faculty as well as students about academic rules and regulations from time to time in accordance with the norms of the University of Madras, UGC and other relevant regulatory agencies.
  • To extend administrative help in constituting and conducting meetings of the Academic Council for the College and the Boards of Studies for various Schools.
  • To contribute towards the introduction of innovative, market-driven and socially relevant UG and PG Courses, keeping in view the current trends, industry requirements, etc.
  • To make arrangements for the introduction of inter-disciplinary elective courses and similar such courses of relevance in the course curriculum.
  • To gather and coordinate the details pertaining to various Courses across disciplines and periodically disseminate such information.
  • To maintain databases relating to curricula/syllabi, examiner panels and Members of the Academic Council and Boards of Studies.
  • To promote inter-departmental programmes.
  • To aid and encourage the Schools in the conduct of seminars, workshops, conferences, endowment lectures, etc.
  • To work with the IQAC for implementing academic auditing and quality assurance measures.
  • To coordinate with the Office of the Controller of Examinations in the conduct of tests for continuous internal assessment (CIA). Coordinate with the Principal and other Deans for conduct of End Semester Examinations.
  • To plan and conduct re-tests, where required, with the assistance of the Deans.
  • To conduct registration of students for interdisciplinary and non-major elective (NME) paper.
  • To prepare the Agenda and Minutes of the Academic Council meetings.

E-governance


Guru Nanak College, has established an efficient and effective e-governance system by incorporating latest technologies for the smooth functioning of the institute. As a part of e-governance initiative, GNC-IMS (Guru Nanak College – Integrated Management System) project was initiated to integrate all frameworks into a single system and to make the e-documentation and e-processing full-fledged, thus making the Campus into “Paperless Campus”. The System acts as a Central Repository /Documentation Centre and supports the management in decision-making and helps the institute to adopt to the changing trends in technology in the field of education sector. The modules are designed by an in-house team in an intricate, dynamic and customizable format and ensures security features. The project has been implemented in the areas of Administration, Academics, Research and Extension.

Chennai Flood

The Chennai Floods in 2015 caused unprecedented disaster in the neighborhood. Thousands of trees were uprooted disrupting land and air transport. The electricity lines were damaged extensively and the city was plunged into darkness for several days. Communication networks were paralysed as the mobile communication installations were also uprooted, posing a great challenge to the relief work. The flood waters rose to a dangerous level and several residential localities were badly affected.

Yeoman service was taken up by a team of volunteers of police officers, Home Guards, Guru Nanak College staff and students led by our General Secretary and Correspondent Mr Manjit Singh Nayar.

Hundreds of residents were rescued from marooned homes in boats, sheltered at Guru Nanak College and were also provided food. Besides this, 200,000 food packets were prepared by the College team at the Langar Kitchen in the College and distributed through the police to the stranded citizens for the first four days, even before the government machinery sprung into action.

Mr T.K. Rajendran, the then Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai City appreciated the efforts of Mr Nayar and presented him a Memento for this service to the society. In recognition of his commendable services, Mr Manjit Singh Nayar was honored with the Presidents’ Medal by the Honorable President of India for Meritorious Service rendered by him in Tamil Nadu Home Guards in the year 2018.

Covid - 2020

The Guru Nanak Educational Society (GNES) in association with the Tamil Nadu Home Guards offered to conduct a relief camp, in the College campus as a part of Institution’s Social Responsibility. Around 400 guest workers (mainly from Odisha) and 100 Volunteers were provided accommodation, nutritious food, health screening, yoga and exercise sessions, adhering to social distancing and all hygiene norms for 45 days. Second batch of over 2200 guest migrant workers from Assam and other states of India were accommodated for over a week.

The camp was supported and visited by several service organizations and individual donors. High ranking officials including the Director General of Police, Commissioner of Police, ADGP (Home guards), Commissioner (Corporation of Madras), IAS and IPS officers and other senior officials visited the camp regularly.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri Edappadi K. Palaniswami, visited the camp in person, participated in the distribution of food and addressed the camp volunteers and the guest workers. The Leader of the Opposition also visited the camp and provided large quantities of relief materials.

In addition to these relief camps, the School and College premises were extended for use by the Tamil Nadu Govt. as a Covid Quarantine Center. This quarantine center was inspected and inaugurated by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The great service rendered by the College received wide appreciation from various quarters and this initiative was chronicled by the local, national international press and media. I wish to acknowledge the extensive support both financial and in kind received from the faculty of the College members of the GNES and all other donors.

Covid - 2021

Guru Nanak Educational Society (GNES), have always been in the forefront during every crisis/calamity/natural disaster situation right from the Tsunami, 2015 Chennai Floods, 2016 Vardah Cyclone and the first wave of the Covid 19 Pandemic.

During the second wave of the pandemic, the GNES is procuring all materials and preparing 3000 nutritious and hygienic meal packets for distribution to the Frontline Health staff and Paramedical staff working round-the-clock, in the various Govt. Hospitals in Chennai. A Covid Medical Centre with Oxygen beds has been set up in the Sports Pavilion of the College for the benefit of the public.

The packing of the food and onward distribution is taken care of by the Commando Force of the Tamil Nadu Police, under the direct supervision of the Additional Director General of Police. The GNES has appointed 3 Doctors (1 each on an 8-hour duty), 9 Nurses (3 each on an 8-hour duty).

The Guru Gobind Singh Block (Guru Nanak School Campus) handed over to the Corporation authorities for management and use as a Covid Quarantine Centre with 380 Beds, and a Vaccination Camp organized on the College Campus jointly by the Velachery Corporation Public Health Centre Officials.

The NASSCOM Annual Technology Conference, one of the premier events that bring together technologists, innovators, and industry leaders to explore the latest advancements and trends in the technology landscape was held at Leela Ambience Gurugram Haryana. In the event Guru Nanak College (Autonomous) was felicitated with the award for achieving one of the highest number of NASSCOM certification and Building India as Digital Talent Nation with Future Skills Prime (MEITY NASSCOM Digital Skilling Initiative). The CEO of NASSCOM Future Skills Prime Kirti Seth handed over the award to the College.


Academic Partner Excellence Award 2023

Academic Partner Excellence Award 2023 was conferred upon Guru Nanak College (Autonomous), Chennai by ICT Academy in recognition and Appreciation for training 'Highest Number of Students' through ICT Academy Student Certification Programs. Swabodhini School and Vocational Center for Special Children

Established in 1989, and located in the serene locality of Valmikinagar, Chennai, Swabodhini’s aim is to empower and transform the lives of individuals with autism and related disorders. Our maiden venture began with the passion to help 4 children and today, we continue to grow, and serve, as well as, empower 60+ differently abled students.

Our centre within the premises of Guru Nanak College campus at Velachery was inaugurated in Oct 2018 by Mr Harish Lakshman, Vice Chairman Rane Group and Mr Manjit Singh Nayar – General Secretary and Correspondent Guru Nanak Educational Society.In 2019, we also commenced a primary classroom for Special Children within the premises of Guru Nanak Matriculation School.

Guru Nanak College and Swabodhini together have broken new ground where our students with special needs and other youngsters from the college and school share space and interact with each other. They bond with each other in the playground, during recess hours, celebrations and events (project day, festivals). Students of Guru Nanak College also volunteer with us during many events.

Peers play a critical role as inclusion reduces stigma, allows for social learning, increases social acceptance, and improves the social standing of students with ASD. The parents have seen marked improvement in the confidence levels and communication skills of their wards and the students of Guru Nanak College and School also benefit in terms of an improved and holistic world view.

This partnership has been growing from strength to strength in the last couple of years primarily based on the long-term vision, immense goodwill and commitment of the Management and Staff of Guru Nanak College. Some highlights include:

  • The Guru Nanak center now has over 24 students. (3 classrooms in Guru Nanak College and 1 classroom in Guru Nanak Matriculation School.)
  • Our students benefit from Occupational Therapy sessions in the Therapy room
  • Two students have also been placed in Guru Nanak College – one of them works in the Controller of Exams Department and the other works in the Office Administration Section.
  • One student in the Vocational Course (Computer) has been given admission to the Visual Communication Program at Guru Nanak College.
  • Vocational Course curriculum (in Retail,Culinary skills, Computer and Office Administration) is accredited by the Academic Council of Guru Nanak College (Autonomous). The students who successfully complete this 12 month program will receive certification from the college.This will keep the students in good stead when looking out for job opportunities.
  • Swabodhini has conducted Free Assessment Camps (for individuals with Special Needs) and Summer Fitness Camps within the premises of Guru Nanak College.
  • Swabodhini also puts up stalls selling the products made by Vocational Students (diyas, paper bags etc). Earlier this year we participated in the Hindu Spiritual Fair held in Guru Nanak College premises.
  • The Principal of Guru Nanak College Dr. Selvaraj has presided over Swabodhini’s Graduation Day in 2018.
  • Students also benefit from Gardening, yoga and fitness sessions conducted within the campus.
