The aim of School of Commerce of Guru Nanak College is to develop future skilled workforce and entrepreneurs by employing world-class teaching and learning environment. The commerce courses are industry-oriented with a right amalgamation of knowledge in key areas of Commerce such as, Accounting and Finance, Taxation, Banking, Secretarial Practice, Commercial Law, Personnel Management and Marketing Management.

Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce had its origin in the year 1972. The PG program, M. Com commenced on 1980. The Doctorate program in the Department of Commerce was introduced in the year 1994 which elevated the department as PG & Research Department of Commerce. It has been serving the students’ community for over 5 decades, by imparting quality education. The Department of Commerce, Self-financing stream was introduced in the year 1981. The Departments are well equipped with 29 qualified faculties including 19 Doctorate Holders and 9 of them are Ph.D. Guides recognised by the University of Madras. 85 candidates have been awarded Doctoral Degree through this Department while, 25 of them are presently pursing their Ph.D. degree. Many eminent professors and stalwarts have been a part of this Department and have authored several books which are hugely popular among the students’ community. The PG & Research Department of Commerce and Department of Commerce Self-financing stream runs COMGLITZ and ELITE respectively.

Corporate Secretaryship

The program was introduced in both Aided and Self-financing stream in the year 1981 with the aim of providing the curriculum which enables the students to attain Professional Corporate expertise. The course offers the hands-on experience and working knowledge of a corporate administration, handling company share transactions and more. The students have the ample opportunities to pursue professional course in company secretaryship and the students are manifested and personated as company secretaries to the complete regulatory corporate governance. The departments are equipped with 7 Qualified faculties including 3 Doctorates. The Aided and Self-financing streams runs EUGENICS and PRISM associations for their students respectively.

Accounting & Finance

The program Accounting and Finance commenced on the year 2005. The curriculum of the program is designed in such a way that, it enables the students to take up Professional courses like ICMA, ACS, CA etc. The faculty profiles consist of 9 members which includes 4 Doctorates. The department runs FINACC association for its students.

Honours

The Honours Program was established in the year 2013. The curriculum of this program helps the students take up professional courses like ICMA, ACS, CA. Internships are a compulsory part of the Academic curriculum at the end of each semester. The students are assessed for their learning and development during this internship. It helps them to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios. The department is equipped with 5 faculties which includes 3 Doctorate Holders. The Honours department runs HONORIA association for its students.

Professional Accounting

In the year 2021, Professional Accounting is been added to the commerce stream, which exclusively cater the needs of the CA aspirants. The B.Com. – Professional Accounting with the goal of empowering the students to attain advanced knowledge in subjects of Chartered Accountancy. The program curriculum is fully based on the CA Foundation and CA Intermediate program as to ensure the students not to deviate from their passion of becoming a CA.

B.COM Computer Application

Computer Application program was established in the year 2021. It’s a high-demand course and is designed in a manner to equip students with the knowledge in commerce as well as in the field of computer programming. This curriculum helps the students take up professional courses like ICMA, ACS, CA etc. The program also enables the students to create and build software and also helps them to become software developers and computer system analysts in future.

B.com Information System Management

The programme was established in 2015 with the objective of empowering students with exhaustive knowledge in the concepts which include the disciplines Commerce, Management and Computer science. It provide the students with a chance to pursue higher studies or

Department Associations

The COM GLITZ, ELITE, EUGENICS, PRISM, FINACC, HONORIA are associations of various commerce streams that contributes meaningfully to the training of aspiring commerce students. Guest speakers are invited and many seminars, lectures, quiz programs, soap box sessions, inter-departmental activities are conducted and cover all aspects of the professional field of arts & commerce. It aims to attain holistic development and enrich the qualities of a scholastic commerce aspirant. It enables the students to participate and organise Intra – Department, Intra - Collegiate and Inter - Collegiate competitions. The students are moulded for the event management.

GNC Ndevour

The School of Commerce runs its own mock company GNC Endeavour in which the students are assigned various roles and responsibilities to attain business knowledge in a realistic sense. Students learn the actual set up of company with the pre - IPO stage and related aspects in running a company. Students can improve and brighten their entrepreneurial skills, inveigle negotiating skills. They excel themselves in leadership qualities, managerial adroitness. The GNC Ndevour has very articulately provides opportunities for the students. The students get the sense of involvement in the tasks of various activities conducted inside the campus, obtain work experience that might help them to find the avenues of self-employment.

Skill Development

The students are offered various skill development certificate courses with credits. The courses are namely Tally, Advanced Tally with GST, Advanced Tally with ERP, GST Practitioner, IT Practitioner etc. Students acquire the knowledge competency and gain complete exposure to the professional skills. It also enables the self – employment skills of the students.

ED Cell

The School of Commerce has an Entrepreneurial Development cell which helps in nurturing the entrepreneurial skillset of the students.

MOU's

The School of Commerce has also signed MOUs with Industries and Professional bodies and it conducts various collaborative programmes for the benefit of the students. Students are offered to carry out their internship training with the MOU signed companies. Students graduating from the School of Commerce can find themselves placed in various corporate positions globally, can pursue higher studies or can choose to become entrepreneurs and contribute to nation building.

Industrial Visit & Educational Tours

As part of the curriculum and academic skill enrichment also to impart the practical exposure of the actual working environment for the students, they are taken for the industrial visits. It helps students to gain the information regarding the functioning of the industries. Students are exposed to the experiential learning that helps in right understanding of the theory. That engages the students in active learning out of the class.

IDE

Students have given the opportunity to elect the inter departmental course from the various departments. IDE will complement the educational and career goals for the students. Students are encouraged to opt any course out of their interest to enhance their hidden skills & talents.

Placement

Our students are given pre-placement training, to accept the challenges in the industry. The placement cell totally acts as a liaison between the corporate sector and the students. The placement cell strives to groom the students for the industry by assisting them in getting varied and suitable job opportunities. The placement cell rigorously conducts the internship drive, one of the strongest initiatives to our students.

Alumni

The School of Commerce has a strong base of Alumni, who are actively involved in providing career guidance, entrepreneurial development and pre-placement training to the current students and help them to enhance and enrich their skills and knowledge to meet the industrial requirements.

Counselling

The difficulties encountered by the students, those who facing learning challenges or due to personal reasons are provided with structured assistance and expert counselling in achieving academic as well as personal success. The counselling helps them to overcome their difficulties and explore their abilities and reach their potential. The counsellor ensures that students are provided with appropriate assistance and guidance related to their academic performance matters.

Parent-Teachers Association

The PTA is to serve a bridge between parents and staff. The school of commerce actively engage in and organize regularly to ensure that the parents are well informed about the progress of their wards. The main purpose of providing a forum for the discussion of the improvement of the students and participating in activities, academic performance, mental emotional development, and insuring the full cooperation of the parents for the same.

The remarkably accomplished and proficient faculty members of the Commerce department strive to equip the students with multi-dimensional talents to face the competitive world in the future. The faculty of commerce is undoubtedly able to connect with the students and enhance the social skills, emotional intelligence also motivates and mold them, in acquiring their knowledge, skills, talents, etc. The curriculum is substantiating the global needs by empowering the students through acquainting various prescribed standards required for international trade & business.

The students entering the School of Commerce are well nurtured in every aspect. They are provided knowledge, various skillset to proceed further in their life. The students can find themselves placed via Campus Placements or they can become Entrepreneurs or they can further deepen their knowledge through the PG programs offered in the campus such as M.Com., MBA, MCA, MSW etc. The School of Commerce has a holistic approach to the quality education, strong industry connections, unique learning experience by combining theory with the practical study that goes beyond the classroom. The Second-year students of B. Com Professional Accounting went on a field visit to the Adyar-Eco Park (Tholkapiaar Poonga) on 7 February 2023 as a part of their EVS curriculum. The visit started with an orientation by the Eco-Park officials. The students were briefed about the rapid encroachment which destroyed the wetlands, its connectivity to the Adyar river and the restoration process in its entirety. A guide accompanied the students on the tour of the Eco-Park, explaining the history and significance of the wetlands, vegetation, flora and fauna at each stage of the visit.

The B.Com. Accounting & Finance programme has arranged an Industrial Tour on 09.05.2022, 10.05.2022 and 11.05.2022 for final year Students to Munnar, Alleppey and Cochin of Kerala. Mr. M. Day one was last with Munnar where Students visited a Tea estate and learned the cultivation process of the Tea leaves. They also visited a Tea factory and a flower garden in Munnar. Second day of the tour is engaged at Alleppey where Students have explored Vempa Nadu Lake by staying in a Boat House for a whole day. Day three was engaged by the Students at Cochin where they went for Marine drive and explored traditional places of Cochin on the same day

Mr Viswa Shankar, Advanced Analyst at Ernst & Young GDS and a distinguished alumnus of Guru Nanak College, delivered an insightful Alumni Talk on Emerging Trends in Corporate Taxation & Strategies. Ms Pavithra Gunasekaran, a distinguished alumnus and current MBA student at ISSM Business School, delivered an Alumni Talk on Business Communication and Networking. Intell(ISM) Art Association was inaugurated and Seminar on the “Forefront of Innovation in the Development of Iconic Fruit-Based Beverages," was hosted by Dr. A. Gunasekaran, General Manager – Plant Operations of Parle Agro Pvt Ltd, Chennai, as the Resource Person. 173 students participated in highly informative session covering essential topics about beverages, packaging methods, advancements, innovations in the domain, and the production process.

To enable the students to learn and explore new investment opportunities a three-day Seminar on “Investment opportunities in share market” was organised by the Programme of B.Com Corporate Secretaryship (SFS-II) from January 29th to 31st. A Three-day seminar on “Knowledge Enrichment Program on Tradition & Culture”

The Programme of B. Com Computer Applications organised a seminar on “Knowledge Enrichment Program on Tradition & Culture” for the final year students from January 22nd to 24th. On Day 1, Ms. Meenatchi, Assistant Professor - Political Science, spoke about the significance of tradition in today’s world emphasizing on the values that they promote. Dr M K Shakila, Head & Dean, School of Management, was the resource person for the second day. Her expertise on the topic "Jammu and Kashmir: People and Lifestyle", coupled with the interactive format, created a platform for knowledge sharing, cultural immersion, and breaking down stereotypes.

The discussion covered multiple life aspects, including how teenagers can be more productive by channeling their ideas and identifying their goals. Com General SFS II conducted a talent hunt 2K24 exclusively for the First-year students by name “FRESHMEN TALENT SHOWCASE” on the 22nd of July 2024 The guests for the show were Mr C Praveen Kumar working in the Investment Banking Section of State Street Bank and Mr. Sanjai working in the same section of State Street Bank and a model by profession.

Seminar of the day 'Empowering the Young Minds

Department of B. Com Corporate Secretaryship – (SFS-I & SFS-II) Organized Inaugural of PRISM Association & Seminars on the topic “Empowering the Young Minds on 31st July 2024. The event was organized in two sessions. The resource person, Dr. Ramana Devika, Assistant Professor, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai, inaugurated the association and delivered a session on “Indispensability of Skills for Professional Competence.”. She explained in detail the importance of soft skills for the employability of the students In the second session the resource person, Dr. W. Julice Sudhir, Associate Professor, AM Jain College, Chennai, and spoke on “Navigating Career Transitions: Skills for Success in a Changing World”. The techniques to develop the competence of the students to sustain themselves in the job market was well explained.

Adapt to the modern world of Business

“BANCLAVE 2K23” organised a seminar on topic “Adapt to the modern world of business” on June 30 . Resource person Mr. Kamalakkannan Kumaravelu, Founder Acxhange, Ex Vice President, CTS, the resource person explained the critical aspects required to be a successful businessman amidst the competitive world. The sessions were interactive and beneficial for the students, evident from the active participation and escalating involvement of the students. The Office bearers were elected and they received their badges.

A five-day workshop on Basics of Banking was conducted for 70 students from July 3 - 7. The workshop helped the students to know about the basics of banking like filling up a Cheque, withdrawal form, demand draft, opening an account, KYC norms, various types of loans including educational loans and other basic things one must know as a student of bank management. Mr Ramakrishnan Chandrasekharan, Ex-Banker and Active Social Worker explained in detail and the sessions proved beneficial.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship As a Career Opportunity

The School of Commerce, Department of Information System Management, Guru Nanak College, organized a Seminar on 27th June. It was basically a Seminar for the students on, “Innovation and Entrepreneurship As a Career Opportunity”.Dr. N. Barathi Dasan, Assistant Professor PG & Research Department of Commerce, Dr.Ambedkar Government Arts College, Vysarpadi was the Resource Person. Nearly 174 students have participated in Seminar with involvement. The session was very informative with the content on Innovation and Entrepreneurship as career Opportunity. Practical exposure of the resource person from his own experience was delivered.

Emotional Intelligence - Seminar by Program if B.com Honours

The Program of B. Com Honors conducted a seminar on “Emotional Intelligence” under Honoria 2023-24 on July 11. The resource person, Dr. T. Karthick, Associate Professor, SRM University, Certified Trainer – Design Thinking. Totally 116 students and 6 staff members attended the seminar and understood the useful measures to balance the skills emotionally and learned self-awareness strategies. The enlightening session given by the resource person was really helpful in managing relationships in a professional environment.

A Three-Day Hands-On Training on “Excel for Data Analytics, Visualization and Specialization”

The Programme of B. Com Information System Management organized a three-day hands-on training on “Excel for Data Analytics, Visualization and Specialization” from January 22nd to 24th. Prof. Dr V Raghavendran and Prof. Dr Y Kalpana, Vels Institute of Science & Advanced Studies, were the Resource Persons. The program aimed to help the students understand the concept of HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP, string, date and macros. The students were also taught to use the productivity tools which would assist them in developing worksheets and to manipulate data lists using Outline, Autofilter and Pivot Tables.

The PG & Research Programme of Commerce in association with ICMAI, organised the Expert panel discussion on fostering Industry-Academia Partnership and Professional Development on September 6. A courtesy visit was scheduled at our institution by a delegation from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The visit was led by CMA Manoj Kumar Anand, a distinguished Council Member of ICMAI and Former Chief Advisor – Cost, Government of India. He was accompanied by CMA T C A Srinivasa Prasad, Vice President – ICMAI, and CMA Rakesh Shankar Ravisankar, Member of the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) of ICMAI.
